Education & Formation

Learning is a living process. It grows through curiosity, experience, reflection, practice, and the relationships we build along the way.

At Northern Pagan Church, education is more than acquiring information about Pagan beliefs and traditions. It is an opportunity to deepen understanding, develop practical skills, explore meaningful questions, and discover how spirituality can become part of everyday life.

We recognize that people come to Paganism with different backgrounds, experiences, interests, and goals. Some are just beginning to explore. Others have practiced for decades. Some seek personal enrichment and community, while others feel called toward deeper commitments or positions of service.

There is room for all of these journeys.

Our educational opportunities are developing around three connected areas: community education, Oathbound formation, and ministry formation.

Community Education

Classes, Workshops, and Independent Learning

Northern Pagan Church is developing classes, workshops, and learning modules that support both newcomers and experienced practitioners.

Our approach emphasizes understanding and application rather than memorization or adherence to a single tradition. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, examine different perspectives, develop their own practices, and consider how what they learn applies to their lives.

Planned educational offerings include subjects such as:

  • Foundations of modern Paganism and its diverse traditions
  • Theology, ethics, and religious philosophy
  • Prayer, offerings, devotion, and personal spiritual practice
  • Meditation, reflection, and discernment
  • Ceremony, seasonal observances, and community worship
  • Ancestor veneration and relationships with Gods and Spirits
  • Community leadership, hospitality, and responsible service

Some offerings will be introductory, while others will explore particular subjects in greater depth. Formats may range from individual workshops to structured courses that unfold over several weeks or months.

These opportunities are intended to support personal growth and practical understanding. Participation in community education does not require pursuing Oathbound status or ordination.

Accessibility and Class Formats

Our classes and workshops are offered primarily online to make educational opportunities more accessible to participants regardless of location, transportation, or mobility.

Select classes and workshops may also be offered in person when there is sufficient interest and an appropriate venue is available.

Each offering will identify its format, schedule, prerequisites, participation expectations, and any associated costs.

Our broader educational catalog is still being developed. New offerings will be announced as they become available.

Oathbound Formation

For those who feel called toward a deeper relationship with Northern Pagan Church, our community, and the Sacred Tree, Oathbound formation offers an intentional opportunity for reflection, discernment, and commitment.

Oathbound is not a requirement for belonging. It is a voluntary commitment grounded in relationships with the Community, the Ancestors, and the Sacred Ones.

The Oathbound Formation Course provides a structured opportunity to explore the Sacred Tree framework, personal responsibility, spiritual relationships, and the meaning of making and keeping an oath.

Participants engage in guided discussions, reflection, practical application, and a capstone project that brings their learning into lived experience.

Completing formation does not obligate anyone to take an oath. Discernment includes the freedom to recognize when a commitment is right, when more time is needed, or when a different path is more appropriate.

Oathbound formation is also distinct from clergy formation. Some participants may eventually pursue ministry, while others may simply wish to deepen their relationships and commitments within the community.

Ministry Formation & Ordination

Some individuals feel called to serve their communities through teaching, spiritual guidance, ceremony, pastoral care, leadership, or other forms of ministry.

Northern Pagan Church approaches ministry formation as a process of developing and demonstrating the knowledge, skill, and personal formation necessary for responsible religious service.

Our goal is not simply to prepare someone to receive a credential. It is to help develop ministers who are educated, practiced, accountable, and prepared to carry the responsibilities entrusted to them.

Formation and Recognition

We recognize that prospective ministers bring different backgrounds and experiences.

Some may begin with little formal religious education and undertake a substantial period of structured formation. Others may already possess relevant knowledge, skills, and experience developed through previous religious service, community leadership, teaching, or independent study.

Northern Pagan Church recognizes prior formation and service as evidence of existing competencies. Recognition does not automatically establish readiness for ordination, nor does it eliminate the need for discernment.

Formation and recognition may work together. An individual may have some competencies recognized while undertaking additional education, mentoring, supervised experience, or other preparation where needed.

Mentoring, Observation, and Supervised Ministry

Ministry formation may include mentoring, observation, supervised practice, and competency assessment conducted in person or remotely, depending on the responsibilities being developed and evaluated.

Some competencies can be meaningfully demonstrated through remote participation and supervision. Others may require direct observation, practical experience, or engagement in a community setting.

The emphasis is on demonstrating readiness for the responsibilities involved, rather than completing a prescribed number of classes or accumulating credentials.

Ordination is ultimately an act of discernment and entrusted responsibility. Completing a course or formation process does not automatically result in ordination.

Learning at Your Own Pace

Growth does not happen on the same schedule for everyone.

Some people learn best through reading and independent study. Others benefit from conversation, guided instruction, practical experience, or time spent reflecting on what they have learned.

Our educational programs aim to recognize these differences while maintaining appropriate expectations for participation, demonstrated understanding, and responsible practice.

We encourage participants to approach learning with curiosity, patience, and a willingness to reconsider their assumptions.

Formation takes time. Readiness matters more than speed.
